July 12, 2010 – Carson, Calif. – Carson Toyota confirms, Toyota Motors Inc., will have two electric-car prototypes by the end of July, as a result of their alliance with Tesla Motors.
Toyota and Tesla engineering teams have made significant progress since May, when the companies announced that Toyota would invest $50 million in Tesla shares, and the automakers would jointly develop electric car models.
Toyota, the world’s largest seller of hybrid autos, plans to jointly develop electric models, which will be modified Toyota vehicles. Toyota believes a number of alternatives to traditional gas engines could find a market in the next few years.
“We are excited to see the prototypes, which will combine Toyota’s ingenuity and Tesla’s electric powertrains,” said Carson Toyota’s General Manager, Marty Brylski. “The outcome of two great companies will develop a vehicle that will better meet the needs of consumers,” he said.
Toyota’s partnership with Tesla is the first of more such alliances that the company wants to pursue in advanced auto technologies, President Akio Toyoda told reporters in Nagoya, Japan. Toyota plans to lead the way in developing vehicles models that consume little or no petroleum and emit fewer gasses.
